Antimicrobial resistance is Dutch priority

Brussels, 15/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - The Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU reported back to the Agriculture Council on Monday 15 February on the conference on antimicrobial resistance that was held in Amsterdam on 9-10 February.

Disproportionate use and misuse of antibiotics are a threat to human and animal health. An antimicrobial resistance action plan has existed for several years. A platform on antimicrobial resistance could be on the agenda.

At the Agriculture Council, Denmark pointed out that it had an action plan on Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The United Kingdom stressed the need for coordination of EU efforts. Slovenia and Poland also indicated the importance of resistance to antibiotics.

The Agriculture Council is expected to adopt conclusions on this issue in the near future. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
