28/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - European Data Protection Day - On Thursday 28 January, the respective European Commissioners for the Digital Economy and Justice, Andrus Ansip and Vera Jourova, celebrated the 10th European Personal Data Protection Day. They emphasised that in December 2015 a historic step had been taken with the agreement between the EP and the Council on new personal data protection rules. These rules will help empower citizens, explained the Commissioners in a press release, and strengthen their trust in the digital world. The Commissioners point out that they are seeking the same security and degree of protection in the agreements with international partners, such as the US, in the framework of the ongoing renegotiations of the Safe Harbour mechanism. On 27 January, the two parties, the EU and the US, began the final round of negotiations in an attempt to complete the talks before the end of the month. (SP)
