26/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - 60% economic migrants in EU. On Monday 25 January, European Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans told Dutch media that 60% of the migrants arriving in the EU are reportedly economic migrants, who are not fleeing war but leaving their country for economic reasons. Some of them come from Morocco and Tunisia and arrive through Turkey. According to Dutch television channel NOS, Timmermans was basing his information on recent estimates from the Frontex agency that have not yet been published. According to Commission spokesperson Natasha Bertaud, these statistics show that the number of people arriving in the EU in December but not able to claim international protection was at its highest in the whole year.
