Brussels, 18/01/2016 (Agence Europe) - Five member states, along with Norway, are currently implementing temporary controls at “Schengen borders”, a European Commission spokesperson said on Monday 18 January.
Arguing the major influx of refugees (Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code), Denmark has given notification that it will continue with border controls until Wednesday 3 February, with particular focus on its land and sea borders with Germany.
Citing exceptional circumstances related to the refugee crisis which is rocking Europe, the other member states have introduced new measures or extended existing provisions. Austria has decided that controls will be carried out at all borders but with special focus on the Slovenian-Austrian land border, which can only be crossed at authorised crossing points. Germany will similarly carry out controls at all its borders, focusing especially on its border with Austria. France has reinstituted border controls until 26 February under the state of emergency which it declared in mid-November following the terrorist attacks in Paris. Sweden will apply controls at all its borders, with special focus on southern and western harbours and Öresund Bridge which links it with Denmark.
Non-EU member Norway, which nonetheless is in the Schengen area, has introduced controls at all its borders, focusing on ports with ferry connections. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
