Council hails opening of new chapters soon

Brussels, 16/12/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 15 December, the Council of the EU stated that it was looking forward to the opening of new accession negotiation chapters for Montenegro on Monday 21 December. These are expected to be Chapters 14 on transport and 15 on energy.

In the conclusions that the ministers adopted, they hail the “constant progress” of Montenegro in the negotiations. However, they say that it is essential for the overall dynamic of the negotiation process that the whole of the rule of law system produces concrete results, especially in the fight against corruption and organised crime. The Council also underlines the need to make progress in the freedom of expression and of the media, the reform of the public administration, the independence of the institutions and the business climate, and the implementation of electoral legislation.

The political parties must show responsibility and revive a constructive dialogue because the parliament is the main forum for political debate, the European ministers state. The opposition parties started boycotting the parliament in September. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
