Council calls for continuation of key reforms

Brussels, 16/12/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 15 December, the Council of the EU called on Albania to make further efforts in the essential priorities that have been set with a view to opening accession negotiations.

“These priorities will need further efforts”, especially regarding the adoption of reforms in justice, but also the fight against corruption and organised crime, the European affairs ministers state in their conclusions. They reaffirm the need to take legislative measures and effective policies to strengthen the protection of human rights and policies for fighting against discrimination. The ministers say that Albania must also continue its economic reforms.

The Council states that as well as its 2016 report, the Commission is asked to give a comprehensive and detailed account on the progress of Albania in achieving these key priorities. The priorities must be implemented sustainably and fully, the Council adds.

The ministers also state that the establishment of a “constructive and sustainable” dialogue between the government and the opposition on reforms linked to the EU is indispensable for making progress on the European path. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
