30/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - Free trade negotiations remain at deadlock. Speaking to EUROPE on Friday 27 November, the commissioner for trade, Cecilia Malmström, expressed little confidence in the likelihood of resuming EU-Malaysia free-trade negotiations any time soon. “We have a dialogue with the Malaysians, but it is up to them to define what they want to do and, at this stage, it seems that it is not the time to resume the talks”, she explained. A free trade agreement with Malaysia, which is a stakeholder to the recent TransPacific Partnership (TPP), is, however, a priority of the Commission's new commercial strategy. In late April, Malmstrom called for the resumption of talks with Malaysia - which were launched in 2010 and have been on ice since the general elections in the country in spring 2013 - but pointed out that Malaysia still has misgivings over many of the EU's demands (see EUROPE 11303).
