17/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - Future of online platforms galvanises MEPs. The Commission intends to strike the right balance between over and under regulation on online platforms. This was the suggestion put forward by the director in charge of the digital economy at DG Connect, Gerard de Graaf, on Monday 16 November. He was addressing the European Parliament committee on the single market and consumer protection in the single digital market. He stated that “The European Union is not well represented in the platform environment. The question is one of establishing how we can have more European platforms in this development. It is important not to over or under regulate. We need to avoid fragmentation because companies do not like legal uncertainty”. He pointed out that a consultation on the subject was open until 30 December 2015. Online platforms can take the shape of search engines, social networks, app stores or even carpooling services. (SPj)
