04/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - Romania's prime minister resigns. On Wednesday 4 November, Romania's Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced his resignation after a demonstration of over 20,000 people in Bucharest the previous day against corruption. Ponta's resignation also comes after a fire in a nightclub over the weekend, which claimed 32 lives. Following the fire, Romania's President Klaus Iohannis called for a fundamental change in Romanian society, which is tormented by corruption. “We must not put up with the incompetence of the authorities or the inefficiency of the institutions any longer. We cannot let corruption develop to such an extent that it ends up killing people”, he said on Sunday. Ponta is due to go on trial for fraud, complicity in tax evasion and money laundering dating back to when he was a lawyer (see EUROPE 11392). (SP)
