EU concerned at possible dramatic consequences of no agreement

Brussels, 04/11/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 4 November, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and the designated prime minister of the transition government in Libya, Fayez Sarraj, spoke of their concerns about the consequences if no agreement is found for the formation of a government of national accord in Libya.

During their meeting in Cairo (Egypt), Mogherini and Sarraj said that their concerns regarded “the high risks for the people of Libya and the whole region if no agreement is reached on the new government in the coming days, and the possible dramatic consequences of such a scenario”, according to a press release from the European External Action Service (EEAS). On 8 October, the UN proposed the formation of a government of national accord, bringing together the different Libyan factions - but this proposal has still not been accepted by the different parties.

Mogherini and Sarraj discussed efforts to agree on a government of national accord and they also discussed the support that the EU is ready to activate “to enable the new government to become operational as swiftly as possible, once agreement among the Libyan parties has been achieved”. They agreed to remain in close contact in the coming days.

Elsewhere, the minister for the Libyan Plan was kidnapped by an armed group on 3 November, after an armed attack on the presidency of the government, according to a committee from the parliament in Tripoli. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
