Commission raising €350 million for most vulnerable countries

Brussels, 29/10/2015 (Agence Europe) - Around €350 million will be earmarked by the European Commission for the period up to 2020, in support of the countries most vulnerable to climate change.

With a month to go until COP 21 (30 November -11 December), this amount was announced in Brussels on Thursday 29 October during the official launch of the second phase of the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) for the 2015-2020 period.

This alliance was set up in 2007 between the EU and developing countries, particularly the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and the most vulnerable island countries, to help support their adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Neven Mimica, the European commissioner for international cooperation and development, said: “supporting the adaptation efforts of the most vulnerable countries is an absolute priority for the EU”. He also highlighted some of the success stories that could perhaps be replicated. This is the case, for example, with the eco-village project in Tanzania, which helped provide adaptation technologies to help rural communities in semi-arid zones in the middle of the country, as well as the project to strengthen the resilience of rural communities in Bhutan and help the country respect its INDC as part of the Paris agreement based on the maintenance of forest areas.

€350 million will go to the GCCA in addition to the public and private investments that this financial contribution is expected to attract.

The GCCA is coordinated by the Commission (DG Development) and the initiative has helped provide support for 51 programmes in 38 countries since 2007. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
