On Thursday 22 October, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini announced that a meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the Quartet (EU, United Nations, Russia, USA) for the Middle East will be held in Vienna on Friday 23 October. The situation in the Middle East has been very tense for several weeks. The aim of the meeting is to “coordinate messages, to send a strong message to the parties, to calm the situation on the ground, to address the situation of holy sites seriously and with restraint, to defuse the (warlike) rhetoric, and to try to start implementing a few positive measures on the ground that might lead to the creation of trust”, Mogherini said at a press conference in Berlin. On 22 October, Mogherini met Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Berlin, and she is due to meet the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, in Brussels on Monday 26 October. (CG)
