Euro area unemployment level remains at 11%

Brussels, 30/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - The euro area unemployment level remained at 11% in August, according to figures published on Wednesday 30 September by the EU statistical office, Eurostat.

Unemployment in the euro area has thus remained stable between July and August: with the publication of its latest estimates, Eurostat has revised upwards the level for July and this level did not fall below the symbolic threshold of 11% (see EUROPE 11379). The unemployment level for the EU as a whole did not have to be similarly revised: it stood at 9.5% in July and did not move in August. Variations recorded between July and August are barely perceptible, not exceeding 0.1% in any member state.

Unemployment among young people aged under 25 rose slightly in the euro area, from 22.2% to 22.3% and remained unchanged at 20.4% in the EU as a whole. Significant variations were noted in seven member states: Czech Republic (from 13.1% in July to 12.4% in August), Italy (from 40.4% to 40.7%), Latvia (from 15.1% to 14.1%), Lithuania (from 19.4% to 18.9%), Poland (from 19.3% to 19%), Portugal (from 31.2% to 31.8%) and Slovakia (from 25.2% to 24.6%).
