Brussels, 29/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 28 September, the EU condemned the recent new wave of violence in the Central African Republic (CAR) - violence which has targeted civilians and humanitarian workers and claimed around 50 lives in Bangui in three days.
Offering her condolences to the families of the victims, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini stated: “Attacks on the civilian populations and the targeting of humanitarian workers whose aim is to deliver lifesaving aid must stop immediately. The overwhelming majority of citizens of the country deserve and demand an end to conflict and division between communities for the country's prospects for peace and recovery.”
Mogherini's spokesperson says that a few months from the elections at the end of the year, “the EU rejects any attempt to deter ongoing efforts towards stability” and reaffirms its support to the United Nations, to MINUSCA (United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic), and to the French SANGARIS force.
The EU calls on all parties to abide by the disarmament agreement signed on 10 May and says “determination is now required by all the authorities of the transition, to build peace and reconciliation so that successful elections can take place”. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
