21/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - Schengen: Council of EU Presidency criticises French Front national provocation. The Luxembourg Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, has condemned the “provocative and cynical” journey made to Schengen (Luxembourg) by Florian Philippot MEP (ENF, France) to lay a wreath to the memory of free movement and celebrate the return to national borders within the EU. In a press release published on Saturday 19 September, Asselborn stated: “The Schengen agreements are part of the European acquis and free movement is a fundamental freedom enshrined in the treaties. The agreements are now part of our daily lives and it is unthinkable that the facilities enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of travellers and cross boarder workers in Europe are challenged by nationalist and reactionary thoughts and political actions”. He added that “The reintroduction of checks at common borders between countries can only be timely and temporary”. (MB)
