Tusk wants to make EU-Jordan partnership stronger

Brussels, 21/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Sunday 20 September, European Council President Donald Tusk said in Amman that he would like to make the partnership between the EU and Jordan “stronger in these difficult times”.

“The EU is firmly committed to continue working together for the benefit of Jordan and Jordanians”, Tusk added at the end of his meeting with the King of Jordan, Abdullah II bin al-Hussein. “Our strong relations make us natural partners in working together in the face of shared challenges”, Tusk said. He commended Jordan's efforts at fighting extremism and terrorism, and said he would like the EU and Jordan to be able to strengthen their cooperation on security further. He also commended the “generosity” of Jordan and its people in hosting and assisting Syrian refugees, “despite the challenges this poses”. “We will continue to support Jordan in this”, he said.

In addition, Tusk encouraged the continuation of political reforms “aimed at strengthening democracy, justice and the rule of law”. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
