18/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - 2.75 million signatures reached against TTIP and CETA. On 15 September, the Party of the European Left (EL) welcomed the fact that through the European Citizens' Initiative 2.75 million signatures have thus far been reached against the transatlantic trade and investment partnership agreement (TTIP) and against the comprehensive economic and trade agreement (CETA) with Canada. “This massive rejection of a treaty made in absolute opacity between transnational lobbyists, the European Commission and the United States, represents the citizens' response against the ratification of TTIP and CETA. These agreements will damage not only labour and social rights, but also standards of food safety and environmental [protection], [they will lead to] the deregulation of public services and cultural goods, and [will damage] proper democracy and the constitutional state”, EL stated. The party aims to collect 3 million signatures by 6 October. (EH)
