16/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU could redirect more pre-accession funds to refugee crisis. On Wednesday 16 September, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn announced that the European Commission was working on redirecting funds intended for Turkey as an EU candidate country in order to address the refugee crisis in this country. “We are ready to consider redirecting as much as possible from the annual envelope [of pre-accession funds], and we are talking about €500 million, because over €100 million has already been deployed for measures linked to the refugee crisis. We are ready to redirect money in Turkey in order to improve the situation in the south of the country where there is a concentration of refugees”, Hahn said at a round table discussion on the EU and its neighbourhood. He stated that Turkey should give its agreement for this redirection of funds and that Turkey had already agreed contractually on how the money from the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (IPA) would be spent.
