11/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - Galileo has two new satellites. On Friday 11 September, the Guiana Space Centre announced the successful launch of two new satellites by the Soyouz launcher. The satellites are intended to expand the Galileo constellation - the future global positioning system which is due to compete with the American GPS system by 2020. According to European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs Elzbieta Bienkowska, the European Commission forecasts economic benefits of €90 billion for the EU over 20 years once the Galileo system is operational, in other words from 2016 (see EUROPE 11286).
