10/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - MEPs call on Congolese authorities to lift censure of film on Dr Mukwege. The European Parliament's S&D Group is calling on the authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to overturn their “unjust and unjustified” ban on showing the film by Thierry Michel and Colette Braeckman on famous gynaecologist and 2014 Sakharov Prize winner, Dr Denis Mukwege (see EUROPE 11205). In a joint press release published on 8 September, several S&D MEPs - Linda McAvan, Marie Arena, Cécile Kyenge and Elena Valenciano - who recently visited the DRC and Dr Mukwege's Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, state: “We call on the government of the DRC to overturn this unjustified decision and allow the film to be shown immediately, and to guarantee the full security of Dr Mukwege and those close to him”. Dr Mukwege is well known for his reparatory surgery on women and children who have suffered rape. (AN)
