09/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - Juncker says study structure of milk market. In the part of his speech which was not given to MEPs on Monday 9 September, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he agreed with the European farmers who demonstrated in Brussels earlier this week (see EUROPE 11383). “There is something wrong in a market when the price of a litre of milk is less than the price of a litre of water”, he writes. It is not necessary to “start micromanaging the milk market from Brussels” but “we should compensate the farmers who are suffering from the effects of sanctions against Russia”. Juncker adds: “European and national competition authorities should take a close look into the structure of the market. Something has turned sour in the milk market. My impression is that we need to break some retail oligopolies”. (LC)
