01/09/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU concerned by action against media. On Tuesday 1 September, the EU said it was “concerned” after police descended the same morning upon a group of media that is critical of the Turkish authorities and suspected of financing terrorism. The EU's concern was also at the arrest of two British journalists working for Vice News, who were charged on 31 August with terrorism. The EU reiterates the importance of the presumption of innocence and “the right to an independent and transparent inquiry (…) which fully respects the rights of defence”, said Maja Kocijancic, a spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. Kocijancic also reiterated the need for Turkey, an EU candidate country, to respect human rights - including the freedom of expression. (CG)
