31/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - Medical needs escalate in Calais. The NGO Doctors of the World said on Friday 31 July that it was being overwhelmed by the explosion in the medical needs of migrants in Calais trying to enter the Channel tunnel. “The situation has deteriorated dramatically. Yesterday, half our patients were seriously injured after falling from trains or lorries”, the NGO said. “About 90 people are seen per day at the field hospital, a basic wooden building staffed by nurses and doctors”, it said, noting, too, that in 2014 “about 15 people died around Calais and this year, since the start of June, we've already had ten deaths” (our translation). Attempts to enter the tunnel are increasing and have led to the death of a migrant on 28 July and increasing tension between French and UK authorities. (SP)
