No change in unemployment in June or inflation in July

Brussels, 31/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - Unemployment remained unchanged in June in both the eurozone (11.1%) and the whole of the EU (9.6%), although youth unemployment rose by 0.2% in the eurozone in that period, according to the latest figures released by the EU's statistical office, Eurostat, on Friday 31 July.

Eurostat announced on Friday that the first estimates suggest that the annual inflation rate in the eurozone will remain unchanged in July at 0.2%.

Unemployment has remained the same in Europe since March 2015, although it has fallen slightly in the United States, where it stood at 5.3% in June. The latest variations recorded by Eurostat in Europe are very light. Only Croatia, Italy and Cyprus stand out with rises of 0.2% in the latter two member states and a fall of 0.4% in Croatia.

Youth unemployment in the eurozone rose slightly to 22.5% in June from 22.3% in May. This average rise was not seen in the EU28 (20.7%) and marks a change in the falling figures that have been seen in the eurozone since 2014. Country-wise, the biggest increases were recorded in Italy, where unemployment among under-25-year-olds rose from 42.4% to 44.2% in a month, and Lithuania (rising to 17.4% from 16.1% in May). Youth unemployment fell noticeably in Bulgaria (by 0.8% to 18.8%) and in Poland, where it fell from 20.9% to 20.3%. (Jan Kordys)
