Brussels, 14/07/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 13 July, following his defeat to Jeroen Dijsselbloem in the election for the Presidency of the Eurogroup (see EUROPE 11358), the Spanish Finance Minister, Luis De Guindos, said that Spain deserved to be better “represented” within the European institutions.
De Guindos thanked the countries which voted for him. According to the Spanish daily newspaper El Pais, the Spanish minister won seven votes against 12 for the Dutch Minister in the first round of the elections. He withdrew in the second round and voted for Dijsselbloem, who then won the unanimous support of his peers.
The next opportunity for Spain to put one of its representatives in a senior European economic position will take place in 2018, when the Vice-Presidency of the ECB is up for grabs, along with the Presidency of the Eurogroup, which may have been converted into a permanent position by then.
