Brussels, 17/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 16 June, the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, put the former Permanent Representative and former Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Pierre Vimont, in charge of preparing the European Summit in Malta, planned for November.
This summit will focus on immigration and is expected to bring together the member states and African countries, in an effort to fight against illegal immigration, human trafficking networks and examine the causes of these migrant flows to Europe, as well as the issues of development cooperation and investment in Africa. On 23 April, the Maltese Prime Minister, Joseph Muscat, announced this “Valletta Conference”, which would help strengthen “cooperation between the countries of origin and transit” in the context of illegal immigration flows, according to a provisional draft (dated 10 June) of the European Council conclusions for the 25-26 June.
