03/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU shocked at killing of humanitarian workers. On Tuesday 2 June, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides said he had learned “with shock and sadness” that nine humanitarian workers from the NGO People in Need have been killed in Afghanistan, and he offered his condolences to their families and colleagues. “The conflict in Afghanistan has claimed too many civilian lives and attacks on humanitarian workers have been increasing”, Stylianides stated, adding that in April five workers from Save the Children were killed. “Attacks on humanitarian workers, who risk their lives to provide life-saving support to people suffering the consequences of the conflict, are a gross violation of international humanitarian law”, he said, reiterating his call to all parties in the conflict in Afghanistan to respect international humanitarian law and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian workers to the people needing help.
