Brussels, 03/06/2015 (Agence Europe) - The Future of Anticoagulation, an expert-led initiative, presented a report on atrial fibrillation in Brussels on Tuesday 2 June.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of cardiac arrhythmia. It can cause heart attacks and the formation of blood clots which, in turn, can cause thrombosis or a stroke.
The report assesses the situation with regard to this illness in Europe, the challenges posed by it for patients and health and health system professionals and offers recommendations.
Atrial fibrillation, a leading cause of death and disability across Europe, is on the increase. In 2010, it was estimated that there were 10 million patients with atrial fibrillation in the EU and prevalence is predicted to rise to 3.3% of the population by 2050. (Isabelle Lamberty)
