European audiovisual groups losing ground. - Over a five-year period (2009-2013) European audiovisual groups (40 countries in total) lost 5.3% of global market share, according to the most recent edition of the European Audiovisual Observatory's Television, Cinema and Video on Demand Audiovisual Services Yearbook. Between 2008 and 2012, operating incomes for non-European groups established in the European Union increased from €48.2 billion to €53.1 billion. Despite the expansion of on-demand services, the sector increased its second year of stagnation in a row in 2013 with a turnover of €133 billion, a slight fall, even compared to the previous year (-0.1%). The most affected sector is the physical video sector (-11.3%) but 2013 was also the year of recession in box office sales (-4.3%), videogames (-1 .8%) and radio television services (-0.5%). The growth in pay television platforms (+2.7%) and online VOD services (+46.1%) did not manage to compensate for the recession in other activities. (Isabelle Lamberty)
