Brussels, 10/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, 9 April 2015, the movement Social Progress Imperative (SPI) announced that the Regional Policy services of the European Commission had launched a project to create a social progress index for the European regions (NUTS II).
A 'beta' version of the index is to be presented in October, according to the organisation, which is already putting together its own similar index at global level. The idea for this initiative was born at a colloquium held in October 2014 in San Sebastian (Spain), which was attended by representatives of the Commission. The social progress index developed by SPI aims to supplement the use of GDP with more qualitative data, such as access to water, obesity rates and Internet access.
