Brussels, 10/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - Some 800 amendments have been made to the report by the British Conservative MEP, Timothy Kirkhope, on the draft directive instituting a European PNR system, the committee on civil liberties (LIBE) of the EP announced in a press release issued on Thursday 9 April.
The deadline for amendments to be submitted had been pushed back from 25 March to 1 April by request of the rapporteurs of the other political groups, to allow all MEPs to be able to take position on this controversial tool to fight terrorism. The amendments are currently being translated. If this process is completed by next week, talks within the LIBE committee may resume on 23 April at the earliest, or possibly in the beginning of May.
The latest discussion dates back to 26 February (see EUROPE 11263 and 11261), when the rapporteur presented his amended report to an audience largely willing to move forward on a dossier which was initially rejected by the committee in April 2013. (Solenn Paulic)
