Danish Advocate General enters Court

Brussels, 07/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - Henrik Saugmandsgaard Øe of Denmark was appointed Advocate General at the Court of Justice by the Council of the EU on Wednesday 1 April. At the same time, eight judges and two advocates general had their terms of offices extended.

Marek Safjan (Poland), François Biltgen (Luxembourg), Sinisa Rodin (Croatia), Allan Rosas (Finland), Küllike Jürimae (Estonia), Daniel Svaby (Slovakia), Endre Juhasz (Hungary) and Lars Bay Larsen (Denmark) were re-appointed as judges for a further period of six years, with effect from 7 October 2015. Advocates General Eleanor Sharpston (United Kingdom) and Juliane Kokott (Germany) similarly were each re-appointed for a further six-year term of office.

Henrik Saugmandsgaard Oe will enter the Court of Justice as a new advocate general from October 2015. The 51-year-old has already lived in Luxembourg, having worked there as a legal adviser to the General Court of the EU. He has been a university lecturer and a member of a law firm before pursuing his career in the Danish Justice Ministry. Since 2006 he has been the consumer ombudsman in Denmark.

The Court of Justice is currently made up of 28 judges and nine advocates general. In view of the increasing workload, the number of advocates general is due to rise to eleven by 7 October 2015. The terms of office of 14 judges and four advocates general are due to expire on 6 October 2015. Between now and then, therefore, the Council still has to appoint four judges and three advocates general. (Jan Kordys)
