EU condemns al-Shabab attack and assures Kenya of support

Brussels, 07/04/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 3 April, the EU condemned the Somali al-Shabab terrorist attack in the strongest terms. The attack claimed the lives of 148 students - the majority of them Christians - and left many wounded in a college near Garissa in Kenya.

“Violent extremism has once again targeted the right of the people of Kenya to live in peace and freedom of religion. By attacking students in the college near Garissa (…) the terrorists showed their determination to undermine education, to provoke division between different faiths, to deprive the country of a future of economic and cultural growth, of stability and dignity for all its citizens”, said High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Offering the EU's deepest condolences to the grieving families and its solidarity with all the victims, Mogherini reiterated the EU's commitment “to supporting the government and the people of Kenya in overcoming the threat from such terrorism”. Giving assurances that Kenya can count on the EU's solidarity, Mogherini added: “we will work on reinforcing our support for Kenya's counter-terrorism efforts”.

Three days of national mourning for the victims of this Easter attack have been declared. They began on Sunday. (Aminata Niang)
