Brussels, 20/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - MEPs on the environment committee were told in Brussels on Wednesday 18 March that the next round of inter-institutional negotiations on the reform of European biofuels policy would take place on 24 March.
At the first trialogue meeting, in Strasbourg on 10 March, the Parliament, the Council and the Commission each presented its position on this piece of draft legislation which seeks to amend the fuel quality directive (98/70/EC) and the renewable energy directive (2009/28/EC) in order to promote more sustainable biofuels.
They put the emphasis on the main points to be settled: - taking account of the ILUC (indirect land-use change) factor in calculating greenhouse gas emissions from first generation agrofuels; - capping the percentage of first generation agrofuels in the share of renewable energy in transport by 2020; - the target to be set to encourage the use of third generation biofuels in transport (see EUROPE 11262).
The three institutions underlined the need for an open approach, as the tight second reading timescale barely leaves time to reach agreement. (Aminata Niang)
