Cameron counting on Tusk's support for EU reform

Brussels, 20/03/2015 (Agence Europe) - Reforming the EU through an amendment to the treaties is not a “mission impossible” for David Cameron, if he wins the elections on 7 May in the United Kingdom.

Speaking in Brussels following the European Council on Friday 20 March, he even said that he hoped he could be as effective as Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible film and who always prevails at the end. Cameron said, “If I come back here after this election, I will have a mandate ... for change in Europe and that mandate will be very powerful ... I know that Donald will be helpful ... in bringing forward what is necessary for the reform of the European Union”.

Cameron would like to change the relationship between his country and the EU and repeated the fact that he would organise a referendum before the end of 2017 on the United Kingdom's future in the EU. “It will be for the British people to decide whether we will remain in the European Union on this new basis or leave all together. If Miliband comes here in June (to the European Council), there will be no reform, no referendum. There might be many in the EU who'll breathe a sigh of relief because the status quo will continue unchallenged and British concerns will continue to be ignored”.

Donald Tusk has said that he wants to help find a solution that addresses the United Kingdom's concerns, but also respects the fundamental values of the EU. He believes it is possible to find good solutions for the United Kingdom under the current treaties, whilst being prepared to discuss the so-called 'Mission Impossible' (changing the treaties), if necessary.
