New Spanish proposal to reduce abortion rights

Brussels, 19/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - A streamlined version of the revision to the abortion law in Spain was presented by the Conservative party in power on Wednesday 18 February. The Conservatives are proposing that abortion for minors requires prior consent from parents.

The People's Party withdrew a first casting of the law in September, which would have drastically reduced the right to abortion in Spain (only in cases of rape or if the mother's life is in danger). The European Parliament initiated a significant mobilisation of its forces against this initiative. The party of Mariano Rajoy, however, did not completely abandon its project. A slimmed down legislative project was recently submitted to Congress, which on this occasion, seeks to prevent minors being able to have an abortion without having informed their parents beforehand.

The chairperson for the committee on women's rights, Iratxe Garcia Perez (S&D, Spain) criticised the fact that the Spanish government was seeking to reconcile itself with the most conservative sector of its electorate “by attacking women's rights again”.

According to the MEP, “Women's rights are a priority of the European Union and European women will defend their right to decide over their own maternity all around Europe”. (Marie-Pauline Desset)
