Brussels, 11/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - The Swiss Federal Council took a number of decisions on Wednesday 11 February in relation to implementation of the new constitutional arrangements, following the referendum of 9 February 2014, in which the Swiss people voted for independent management and setting of immigration limits (see EUROPE 11244). This decision requires amendment of the free movement of persons agreement (FMPA) with the European Union (EU) that takes account of Switzerland's overall economic interests. The Federal Council passed the draft legislation on foreigners and agreed complementary measures to maximise the use of the workforce already available in Switzerland. In addition, it adopted the mandate for negotiations with the EU on the FMPA. EUROPE will return to this.
