Brussels, 11/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 10 February, the European Union expressed its “deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Kayla Mueller”, a 26-year old American aid worker, who was taken hostage by Islamic State (IS). The White House has confirmed her death without giving further details.
“Her death is just the latest in a long and terrible series of killings perpetrated in the Syrian conflict”, say High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides in a joint press release.
Both Mogherini and Stylianides pay tribute to Kayla Mueller who was “committed to help bring relief to the victims of this conflict”. They add: “We must redouble global efforts to put an end to the murders and suffering caused by this conflict - this would be the best way to honour her memory and the memory of the other civilian victims whose number is too great to count”. Mogherini and Sytlianides confirm that “the European Union remains committed to contribute to regional and international efforts to fight Da'esh [IS] and other terrorist groups which threaten regional and global stability”.
