11/02/2015 (Agence Europe) - EU questions sentencing of Malaysian opposition leader. On Tuesday 10 February, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said that the conviction and sentencing of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in Malaysia raises serious questions regarding due process of law. “Trust in the administration of justice is an essential component of the democratic process”, Mogherini's spokesperson stated, saying that the EU regards Malaysia as a key “political and economic” partner in South East Asia. On 10 February, the federal court of Malaysia confirmed the sentencing of Ibrahim for “sodomy” in an affair that dates back to 2008. He was sentenced last year to five years in prison (see EUROPE 11039). (Camille-Cerise Gessant)
