EU criticises fresh attacks in Sinai

Brussels, 30/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 30 January, the European Union criticised the terrorist attacks in Northern Sinai (Egypt) which resulted in the loss of at least 29 lives, left numerous people wounded and brought about the destruction of state infrastructure.

High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini stated that the continued attacks “undermine Egypt's stability and economic development”. “The fight against terrorism will remain the EU's priority and, together with our partners, we need to jointly tackle this common threat”, she added.

Responsibility for the three simultaneous attacks, targeting the police and army with bombs and rocket fire, was claimed by the Egyptian branch of Islamic State. The result is the most deadly for the security forces in three months. Two children were killed and two people, including a baby, were wounded in clashes between the army and jihadists in Sinai during the morning of Friday 30 January.

Mogherini reiterated that the EU stands by Egypt in its efforts to address the multiple challenges the country is facing. (CG)
