Council must decide on car reregistration

Brussels, 22/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament is increasing pressure on the Council to unlock the negotiations on the reregistration of cars in member states other than the one in which the initial registration was made. The Commission believes that harmonised rules would not have an impact on the taxes deducted by member states. On Wednesday 21 January, the Commission provided assurances to MEPs at the Parliamentary committee that harmonising rules on the reregistration of cars or motorbikes in other member states would not have any impact on the fiscal revenues of the respective governments. The European Parliament has approved the new rules proposed by the European Commission on this subject but the Council has not yet done likewise and has asked the European Commission to proceed with an impact study into the respective national tax systems.

In the document presented to their MEPs, the Commission demonstrates that the majority of member states to not expect any impact on their taxation.

Bolstered by this observation, the rapporteur on the draft regulation, Dita Charanzova (ALDE, Czech Republic), said that the Council could no longer use any excuses for delaying the legislative work in this connection. She is urging the Council to adopt its position on the subject as soon as possible and come to the negotiating table with the European Parliament. (MD)
