Aid to British co-generation power station confirmed

Brussels, 22/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 22 January, the European Commission authorised British aid for a biomass co-generation powerstation in Teeside (United Kingdom).

In November 2014, the United Kingdom notified the Commission of a support project for the operation of a co-generation powerstation to be built in the Tees Valley. This powerstation, to be up and running in July 2018, will run solely on biomass to produce 299 MW of electricity, to be fed into the National Grid and local customers supply.

The Commission finds that the project will help to achieve the EU's energy and environment objectives. Additionally, it finds that the British state aid complies with the guidelines on state aid for the protection of the environment and energy, in place since July 2014. It will be granted to the operator of the power station in the form of a variable premium above market electricity prices, to offset the higher costs of producing energy from biomass. (MB)
