1% of population owns nearly 50% of global wealth. - A study by Oxfam indicates that 1% of the population owns nearly half of global wealth. Entitled “Wealth: Having It All and Wanting More”, the report is based on Crédit Suisse statistics and data from the magazine Forbes. It shows that year-on-year, the wealthiest people are getting richer, with the share of the world's wealth owned by the richest 1% rising from 44% in 2009 to 48% in 2014. Forecasts show that this figure will have risen to 50% by 2016. In 2010, the net fortune of the 80 wealthiest people on the planet stood at 1,300 billion dollars and in 2014, it was expected to stand at 1,900 billion dollars, or a 50% increase in the space of four years. In other words, the 80 richest people will own as much as the other 3.5 billion put together. At the same time, the wealth of the 50% poorest was down in 2014 compared to 2009. (IL)
