Brussels, 19/01/2015 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday 17 January, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini hailed the progress that was made during the discussions between the Libyan parties.
“Some steps in the right direction have been taken during this week's round of talks hosted by the UN in Geneva”, Mogherini stated in a press release, adding that this initial progress was “a start” and should be welcomed - but “there's still a long way to go”, she warned. Mogherini said the participants had shown a “constructive attitude” and had expressed commitment to finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Libya, through dialogue.
The high representative encouraged all the representatives invited, “including those who did not attend this round” of discussions, to participate in the second round of talks next week “with the same spirit of respect and consensus”.
“The gravity of the situation in Libya requires that all Libyans place the interest of their nation above their differences and reach an agreement that can finally put an end to the deepening political and security crisis in the country”, Mogherini said. On 18 January, the Libyan army announced a ceasefire, two days after a similar announcement from the coalition of militia, Libya Dawn.
At the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday 19 January, ministers spoke about how to help Libya. (CG)
