“Idawins 2014 Lux prize

Brussels, 17/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - During a prize-winning ceremony organised in Strasbourg as part of the EU's plenary on Wednesday 17 December, the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, announced that the 2014 Lux Prize would go to Ida, directed by the Polish cinematographer Pawel Pawlikowski. This film tells the story of a young woman in search of her identity and is moving personal story that is set during a very painful period in European history.

Schulz explained, “through the stories brought to us by European cinema, we have gained a better understanding of each other. The stories strengthen the feeling of belonging to the same group and help bring down national barriers”.

Ida was competing with Bande de filles (France) and Class Enemy (Slovenia). These three films received funding from the European Parliament so that they could be subtitled into the EU's 24 official languages. They were shown during the Lux Prize Days in the 28 member states and the winner was chosen by MEPs during a secret ballot. (IL)
