Promise of aviation package in 2015 pleases sector

Brussels, 17/12/2014 (Agence Europe) - Aviation has caught the attention of the new Commission which is about to devote to it a legislative package which includes a communication on the competitiveness of the sector.

However, what the Commission gives with one hand in its 2015 work programme, it takes away with the other: proposals for a regulation liberalising ground handling services and a directive on security levies will be withdrawn.

The stakeholders (the Association of European Airlines -AEA - and European airports - ACI Europe) have been calling for the European Commission to take an interest in the air sector's competitiveness, and have long called for support from the European institutions. However, withdrawing the proposal on liberalising ground handling services is a missed opportunity in the view of the airlines which call on the Commission to consider an alternative. (MD)
