EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) capital punishment

24/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU welcomes vote on death penalty resolution. The EU High Representative, Federica Mogherini, described the adoption, in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) of the resolution “Moratorium on the use of death penalty” as a “landmark step”. She also stated, “The record number of 114 votes in favour (with 34 against and 26 absentions) confirms the steadfast abolitionist trend worldwide and is an encouragement to continue with our efforts to wipe out this inhumane punishment”. Mogherini hopes that “this strong positive result will be confirmed and even improved in December's General Assembly vote, and I call on all states who have not yet done so, to join this big group of supporters”. Since 2007, the General Assembly has already adopted four plenary session resolutions in favour of the moratorium on the death penalty. (CG)
