Brussels, 24/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - During the evening of Friday 21 November, the EU strongly condemned the murder of villagers in north eastern Nigeria which was carried out by the Boko Haram Islamic sect and resulted in a very heavy loss of human life for civilians. The next bilateral EU-Nigeria ministerial dialogue meeting will take place in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Thursday 27 November. This will offer the EU and the Nigerian government another opportunity to discuss the means to intensify the fight against this scourge.
“Deadly attacks on innocent villagers have become daily routine in north eastern Nigeria. It is appalling to see that Azay Kura in Borno state has been targeted already for the second time this year”, said the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini in a written statement. This latest attack has claimed 48 lives and left over 50 wounded.
The EU offers its condolences to the families of those killed and wishes a fast recovery to those who have been wounded. It reiterates that it “stands with the Nigerian government and its people in their fight against terrorism” and states that the ministerial dialogue will “give us the opportunity to discuss how further to reinforce the Nigerian efforts to bring peace, security and development to the areas affected by the Boko Haram insurgency”.
