MEPs want to know more about Triton and Mediterranean situation

Brussels, 05/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - The members of the European Parliament's civil liberties committee decided on Wednesday 5 November to question the European Commission and the Italian Presidency at the end of November on the Triton operation, which took over from the Italian Mare Nostrum operation in the Mediterranean, and on how to strengthen solidarity among the member states.

The MEPs have chosen precisely eight questions on the migratory and asylum situation in the EU with regard, inter alia, to ensuring that assistance and rescue at sea obligations are properly met, to whether the activities of the Frontex agency should be extended, to how long the Triton operation will run, and to developing safe, legal ways for refugees to enter the EU. The MEPs also want to know how the common European asylum scheme is implemented and how European funds, in particular, the emergency funds, are spent. (SP)
