Brussels, 04/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - In a press release on Monday 3 November, the new European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos said that he was appalled that at least 24 people seeking to enter the European Union (EU) had died off the coast of Istanbul when their ship sank. During his hearing before MEPs at the end of September, he promised to develop legal opportunities for immigration. Six of the 43 passengers, most of whom were Afghan nationals attempting to go to Romania, were rescued safe and sound by the rescue services.
The new Commissioner, who is taking over from Cecilia Malmström, stated, “I am appalled by today's tragedy in Turkey. This new deadly incident brings once again to the forefront the urgency to take concrete action to save lives, to address irregular migration, and to help those in need of protection. It is imperative to improve cooperation on this matter with countries that function as departure points for migrants seeking to reach EU countries. On my first working day as Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, this is my top priority”. (SP)
